Frame Height

Is it better to have a higher or lower bed frame?

A higher bed frame wins for most adults because it's easier to get in and out of, keeps the mattress further from floor-level dust, and leaves usable under-bed storage clearance, typically 14–18 inches on standard platform and metal frames.

That said, bed frame height isn't one-size-fits-all. A lower frame, usually 7–12 inches from floor to mattress top, suits shorter sleepers, children, and anyone who prefers a minimal or floor-level aesthetic. The practical rule: sitting on the mattress edge, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at roughly 90 degrees. For most adults, that lands between 24–26 inches total mattress height, which a standard-height frame supports comfortably.

  • Low bed frames sit 7–12 inches off the floor; standard frames sit 14–18 inches off the floor.
  • Ideal seated mattress height for adults is 24–26 inches from floor to top of mattress.
  • Under-bed storage requires at least 12 inches of clearance, only standard or tall frames reliably provide this.
  • Lower frames reduce fall risk for children and older adults who roll during sleep.
  • Higher frames can worsen knee and hip strain if mattress-top height exceeds 30 inches total.
